Lee declares Kohli 'best in the world'
Former Australia quick Brett Lee rates India's Virat Kohli as the best player in the world right now – and it's easy to see why.
After dominating in white-ball cricket for the first half of this year, India's Test captain seamlessly translated his form into the five-day game last week, posting his maiden Test double century in the first Test against the West Indies.
It brings to 12 the number of scores of 50 or more Kohli has scored for his country in 2016 across all three formats from just 18 innings.
It's left Lee in no doubt where the 27-year-old sits among the world's best players.
"I feel Virat is the best cricketer at the moment," said Lee, who is currently in India to promote his film UNIndian.
"Sachin (Tendulkar) is the best batsman (ever) and now I feel Virat is tremendous from his work ethic ... his aggression is amazing. People look up to him."
Having starred during the one-day international and T20 series in Australia in January, Kohli's hot form continued through the T20 Asia Cup and then the World T20, where he was named player of the tournament.
He earned the top honour again in the Indian Premier League in April and May after he was dismissed for less than 50 on just five occasions from 16 innings, scoring four centuries and seven fifties.
And he's barely missed a beat since changing gears for the red-ball game, striking 24 boundaries in his 200 in Antigua.
Kohli expects to have a more challenging time in the second Test at Sabina Park in Jamaica, starting early on Sunday morning (AEST), at a venue that has traditionally favoured the faster bowlers.
The home side are expected to boost their pace attack with one ofuncapped 19-year-old Alzarri Joseph and Barbadian Miguel Cummins on a surface that history suggests will produce a result.
Quick Single: Unsmiling assassin targeting a Test debut
"Obviously we need to be wary of the conditions a bit more because it is a ground that is result oriented," Kohli said.
"It's obviously going to take more application than we showed in Antigua, more concentration and more responsibility by the batsmen to do the job."
The tourists will make at least one change for the match with KL Rahul to replace opener Murali Vijay, who has been ruled out with a thumb injury.
Despite the bowler-friendly surface, Kohli indicated India's selectors would stick to a side featuring just five frontline batsmen after No.6 Ravichandran Ashwin (113 in the first Test), No.7 Wriddhiman Saha (43) and No.8 Amit Mishra (53) all stepped up with the bat in Antigua.
Quick Single: Ashwin reclaims world No.1 ranking
"That deepens our batting line-up and still gives us the bowling options that we require to get 20 wickets," Kohli said.
"There's honestly not much room for change when you've won the first game knowing that the fast bowlers (Ishant Sharma, Mohammad Shami and Umesh Yadav) have done the job for you.
"There's some good bounce in this wicket and the last time we played a Test match here in 2011, Ashwin and Harbhajan Singh both got good turn and bounce so the spinners can't be left out of the game as well.
"There's a second innings, we have to remember that. When the wicket dries up, it will start turning."
The second Test gets underway at 1am AEST on Sunday morning with live scores, news and highlights on cricket.com.au.
