Melbourne Cricket Club floats $1b redevelopment plan, joining MCG with Richmond station

Plan to redevelop MCG precinct

The proposal includes increased footpaths between the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and Richmond Station.

It also includes plans for more public spaces for live events and parklands.

A feasibility study, which includes the rail corridor between MCG and Melbourne Park, was commissioned by the MCC and MCG Trust in order, after a request by the state government.

The Shane Brown MCC said that it was no funding or timetable for the construction, but added it was part of a long-term vision.

"For a long time now we wanted to have the connection between the MCG and the pedestrian over the yard at Melbourne Park, especially for the safety and security to improve," he said.

"It is something that we think at some point, must be done in time to ensure that the county that we have now, is current and remains in this world-class level."

Mr Brown said the project could take up to 20 years to build.

"It is still very much in the design phase, but it is an idea that we are to be in the mix when the government and others, the future of the sport zone look," he said.

Last year, an $ 8 million overhaul of Richmond Station was put on hold due to the Melbourne Metro Rail project.
